This free printable draw-and-write worksheet helps kindergarten and first grade children move from supported sentence practice toward more independent writing. Children first follow the prompt to draw a frog jumping in a pond. They then use their picture for ideas as they complete the sentence starter “The frog is…” in their own words.
Unlike a single-word fill-in-the-blank activity, this worksheet allows for many correct responses. A child might write that the frog is jumping, green, in the pond, or add a longer description based on the scene they drew. This encourages children to generate their own language while practicing sentence completion, vocabulary, handwriting, and the connection between an illustration and written description. Use this free kindergarten and first grade writing worksheet for homeschool, at-home literacy practice, or extra early writing work.
